The Federation participated in the Lehman Brothers Philanthropy Fair on May 15 and 16th. Federation staff spoke with Lehman employees about Asian American issues, volunteering, and service opportunities within the community.

The Federation’s annual Spirit of Asian America Gala is held in honor of prominent Asian American and their professional endeavors, community service and personal philanthropy. This year’s honorees included:

  • Arvind Raghunathan, Managing Director & Head of Global Arbitrage at Deutsche Bank;
  • Sung-Joo Kim, Founder of Sungjoo Group and Chairperson of MCM;
  • Farooq Kathwari, Chairman, President & CEO of Ethan Allen Interiors Inc.; and
  • Haruko Smith, Founder & Chairman of the September Concert Foundation.
Over 500 guests, including Ambassador Frank Wisner, Vice Chairman, External Affairs American International Group and former Ambassador to India, City Comptroller William Thompson, and New York City Police Commissioner, Ray Kelly, attended.

AsiaNextGen, a giving circle, is a group of young philanthropists dedicated to making a difference in the community by collectively pooling donations for issues of common interest. In 2006, they raised $20,000 for the Child Guidance Center of NY's Asian Outreach Program and expanded their membership to 11 Asian American professionals who are donating time, skills and money to collaboratively fund and strategically impact issues and nonprofits.  For more information, pls visit: www.asianextgen.org

Volunteer Outing w/ JP Morgan Chase’s AsPIRE!

Members of JPMorgan Chases’ AsPIRE will volunteer their time and help clean and paint the offices of the Child’s Guidance Center’s Asian Outreach Program. Special thanks to JPMorgan Chase for donating funding towards much needed equipment and supplies.

The Center serves more than 10,000 children annually, ranging in age from newborn to 18 years. They help families by counseling the emotionally disturbed and substance abusers, intervene with families to protect children from abuse, visit homes to support families coping with children at imminent risk of psychiatric hospitalization, and enhance the literacy skills and development of children and youth.

On May 31, 2006, EY/Asia hosted an Asian themed food festival which benefited AAFNY’s mission and programs. The event was attended by over 140 guests who dined on cuisine including Japanese sashimi, Indian samosas, and Thai chicken. EY/Asia is an internal affinity group for networking and career development.

AAFNY Opens NYSE!

The Asian American Federation of New York opened the New York Stock Exchange on May 10, 2006 in celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. Gina Lin Chu, The Federation’s 2006 Gala "Philanthropist of the Year," rang The Opening BellSM to the Exchnage.SE. Guests included Federation board trustees, executive officers and friends.

Each year, the Federation’s annual black tie fundraiser, the Spirit of Asian America Gala, recognizes outstanding individuals who have made a direct, substantive contribution to our society and draws many of New York’s preeminent corporate executives, press/media, individual high-net worth donors, community leaders and elected officials.

This year’s honorees included:
Mr. Dow Kim, Executive Vice President, Merrill Lynch;
Mr. Dinyar S. Devitre, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Altria Group; and
Mrs. Gina Lin Chu, Philanthropist.
Awards presented by Mr. Richard C. Holbrooke, former US Ambassador to the United Nations and Dr. Vishakha Desai, President of Asia Society.

Volunteer Day at China Institute in America!

The Young Associates Circle of the China Institute in America will host their Discovery in the Arts program for socially and economically disadvantaged public school students from lower Manhattan.

Program included a tour of the new Chinese lacquer exhibit with a professional docier, creating your own art project and snacks in the outdoor Chinese garden. Each student received gifts certificates donated by Loew’s Cineplex Theatres.

The Federation hosted a SAKE Tasting fundraiser in partnership with:
Harvard Business School Asian American Alumni Association,
Columbia Business School Asian Alumni Club of NY,

to help raise funds for services and programs in our local Asian American communities. A sake sommelier was on hand to discuss the origins and cultural significance of sake. Megu’s talented chefs provided Japanese treats and hors d’ oeuvres throughout the evening!

Merrill Lynch and IPO!

12 volunteers from Merrill Lynch’s IPO (Investing Pays Off) program, which helps youth become financially literate and business savvy, spent the morning with 5th and 6th graders of the Shuang Wen School teaching them about budgeting time and money to achieve personal goals. Activities included creating a personal income statement, time management and daily time sheets.

Philanthropy in Communities of Color: Challenges and Opportunities is a conference coordinated by the Coalition for New Philanthropy, an innovative initiative to promote philanthropy in African American, Asian American and Latino communities throughout the metropolitan New York region. This all-day conference will highlight strategic and innovative philanthropy models. In addition, new research exploring motivations and intentions of donors from these communities will be discussed.

Hosted by AAFNY and sponsored by JP Morgan Chase and Goldman Sachs & Co., students in grades pre-k through 5th were paired up with volunteers from the New York area and participated in a scavenger hunt of the Hall of Ocean Life, African Mammals and the two Dinosaur Wings of the museum. The first seven students to complete the scavenger hunt with the most correct answers won prizes; all students received a book and gifts from the museum gift shop thanks to JP Morgan Chase.

Asian American Professionals' Networking Event
Thursday, October 23, 2003 at Trust Lounge.

Sponsored by Mercedes-Benz USA and attended by approx 300 young professionals from the tri-state area, the Federation discussed the need to give back to one's community and the importance of addressing Asian American issues in society today.

Our Chairman of the Board, Dr. Y. D. Kim, former CEO and President of Hyundai Corp. USA, spoke about his personal experiences in life, the glass ceiling we Asians face in Corporate America and why he became involved in charitable organizations.

Asian Professional Extension (APEX), a youth mentoring organization for underprivileged, inner-city Asian American youth trying to overcome challenges as multilingual and multicultural individuals was featured as one of our member agencies.

Highlighting the evening was Daniel, a former APEX mentee who spoke about his immigrant experience to the US and how, with a mentor and new friends, APEX changed his life.

Volunteer Cocktail Reception

The Federation held an informal reception for volunteers to meet and greet our staff and for those interested in learning more about our mission. The Federation discussed the importance of volunteering in the Asian American community, where people may find volunteer opportunities and how to participate in our Professional Networking Event (3/4/04) and Spirit of Asian America Gala (5/24/04).
