Francis Y. Sogi

I was really influenced by my wife who was always devoted to the YWCA and was extremely active. Then over time, I became more and more moved by the power of the private voluntary sector. I began to realize that giving is not just charity, but really about investing in the future. Asian Americans must learn this important role they can play in America. We can be leaders, but only if we know how to participate in all sectors of American life.

By understanding our past through our own eyes and telling our own story, we will be able to control our destiny within the American culture that is constantly changing. Our diversity is our strength, not our weakness. This is a critical mission for me and motivates all of my volunteerism and philanthropy. Whether it's the Japanese American National Museum, the Asian American Federation, the Japanese American Memorial Foundation, or my alma mater, I am dedicated to building bridges among people, both nationally and internationally.
